In the August edition of Hemmings, on page 31, there's a photo of a 1958 Firesweep convertible that sold at the Mecum 24th Original Spring Classic Auction last May for $200,000!! I like De Sotos, and especially 1958 De Sotos; but $200k for a Firesweep! Granted, it has the under-the-dash record player and the Benrus steering-wheel clock. But even with those extras, I still don't understand why this car sold for such a high price. You would think that for that much money, a person could have gotten a 1958 Adventurer convertible instead. (But then, I haven't priced any '58 Adventurers lately either, nor even seen any around up for sale!)

It seems like the market doesn't discriminate as much these days... a 50's American convertible of just about any make and model is doing well.
My distrust regarding these auction results is renewed after the awesome results of the '56 Fireflite Convertible at the Scottsdale BJ. Sold for $365000 in January, and then it comes right back up for sale in April at the Tulsa (of all places...) Leake Auction, where it brings "only" 165K and then 267K on a second try without meeting reserve. So was the BJ result legit? I wonder.....
It's supposed to be fun!

Cartersandvik,
Any pics of the Firesweep conv near you? Could it be bought?
Thanks, Dave
Value often has little to do with rarity. I think a '58 Adventurer convertible would certainly be worth more than a '58 Firesweep convertible if in the same condition.
I have long been skeptical of some of these auction prices and wonder if that money actually changes hands. While I'd feel bad about selling it (for a day or two) my '55 Firedome convertible could be yours for half that price!
Have a nice day
Steve
