I am looking at buying a '56 Desoto engine and trans. I need to know what the engine block code is for 1956 and how to identify the trans.
I may use this as a transplant for my '47 Desoto.
My requirement is for a torqueflite 3-speed and I want to make sure that the trans is not a powerflite 2-speed.
The ebay number is: 301592493006
The owner has tentatively agreed to my offer...but...I need to make sure that it is what I am looking for as I have to drive from SF to LA to get it...I don't want to make the drive for nothing.
Thanks for the help.
James.
on '56 DeSoto engines, a stamped code is found on the flat portion of the block between the sheetmetal valley cover and the water pump/timing cover.
S23 is the code for the 2 bbl Firedome
S24 is the code for the 4 bbl Fireflite
S24A is the code for the 341 Adventurer engine.
I don't believe any '56 DeSoto came with the 3 speed torqueflite, although they can be retro-fitted without difficulty. Some late '56 Imperials had the torqueflite. I doubt that the trans in the ebay auction you provide is a 3 speed. It appears very much like the air cooled 2 speed of the Firedome series. (as compared to the water-cooled powerflite in the Fireflite).
I have a comparable (in appearance, anyway) '56 4bbl engine/trans out of a Fireflite that I would sell considerably cheaper than the BIN price in that auction, but shipping from Kansas would likely be too much to make it worth the bother.
It's supposed to be fun!

Tim is correct.
Price is too high. You can buy a running car for that.
The Powerflite and Torqueflite both have same direct drive high gear.
The Powerflite is a very good transmission.
If you find a '56 Torqueflite, probably from an Imperial, make sure you get the pushbuttons and the cable.
If you want a DeSoto Hemi, you could go with a THM 700R4 (et al) and an adapter.

I'm not endorsing this product, just an example.
Good Luck
