Here's a photo of my gearshift control rod. The end with the cotter pin is supposed to go into the black grommet of the manual control lever that you see in the picture. Except it appears that something is missing, as the end of the rod is a lot smaller than the ID of the grommet. Is there a bushing that's supposed to go into the hole ? The book and parts book are not clear on this.

Yes. It's lower of the two levers that mounts onto the throttle valve shaft on the tranny's valve body.
