Hi All -

I recently purchased a full power brake setup for a 1955 Desoto. I am trying to rebuild the one-year-only master cylinder. The 'plug' as the parts book calls it, which is the thing with the two small holes opposite each other, is stuck in the bore. I've soaked it in PB Blaster, but no luck. Is there a trick to removing this plug ? BTW, I'm looking to do this myself. *Not* interested in later master cylinders, names of rebuilders, etc.

Hi Ron - How did this go? I have 55 as well, getting a lot of push back and audible hydraulic or vacuum? hissing noise when depressing the pedal, any ideas on how to tune up or do I also need to start looking at a complete rebuild?

The tool that is needed is a spanner wrench. This is the only tool that will remove the disk, mentioned previously. Kinda looks like a pair of wooden chopsticks that you'd get in an Asian restaurant before you pull them apart. The one I found is a Williams 482, which turned up on ebay for about $30.

The tool has two pins that fit perfectly into the two holes in the disk. A couple of whacks in a counter clockwise direction with a 3 lb sledge and the disk was loose and unscrewed fairly easily. Be sure you soak everything first with PB Blaster or similar.
