Hello all,
I just bought another Desoto recently and since the original one is running fine, I have not had any need for parts. With that being said, I am planning on pulling the motor from the recent one and going thru the driveline while I am at it.
With all the posts I have seen lately about U joints and transmissions, can someone assist me with some part numbers to obtain before I start the process?
I would like to rebuild the 276 CI motor as it has sat since 1971 and I thought I might as well go from front to back while I am there. Any suggestions on potential problems with the Tip-Toe trans and things I should start looking for now?
I bought a 1952 276 CI used motor, trans and rear end from a guy in Kansas a few months ago with the idea they would be potential parts donors.
The radiator needs some work I think as it is discolored all thru the fins on the passenger side, so looks like I am "all-in".
Larry,
The first two things you should do are purchase a factory Service Manual and a factory Master Parts Book.
James
Thanks, I have the factory service manual but the other i do not have.
I was thinking that there were known issues with the trans and I could be ahead of the game by having some "just-in-case" parts laying around. With that in mind, I plan to sell the rest at shows after I finish, so whats the harm in getting some hard to find parts, is my way of thinking.
I will look around for a master parts book. I have the wiring book, body book, service book already,
Thanks for your time!
Larry,
Which trans do you have? In 1951-1952 they were changing them from Fluid-Torque Drive to the new true automatics. I have a pile of original Chrysler service bulletins that cover transmissions and the new power steering. I can look and see if anything applies to your car.
James
I have the Fluid-Torque drive trans. I shift using the throttle actuated function in low and high.
Thanks in advance for any help!
Merry Christmas!
