Hello All,

Just got the '50 running. Filled the master cylinder reservoir and ended up w/ a puddle under the car. I'm guessing that means replacing the master cylinder? Short rides to the mail box and back using the e-brake  is fun but not quite the adventure we're looking for.

Any suggestions on how to proceed will be greatly appreciated.

When I sign on w/ the computer at work I'll upload pics. (working from home on cell phone wifi - to slow).

on another note I visited 50plymouth.com and looks to be a good site for info.

Thanks in advance,

Roark

Roark

Contact your local NAPA that you want an Brake Cylinder
Unit for an 1950 De Soto ( trim level does not mean anything )
or an 1950 Windsor ( this is an Junior Chrysler ). The cost is
much lower than "other places".

Thanks for the quick reply. I looked at NAPA online and only saw the rebuild kit. How do I determine whether I can just rebuild, or need a replacement?

I'll stop by the store on the way home from work today, just to see if the store has access to more info.

Thanks again.

Roark, you will have to take the cyl. apart to see if it is rebuildable. If the walls aren't badly pitted you can probably hone it out and rebuild it. Are you sure the leak is coming from the master cylinder? Could also be a wheel cyl. or a rusted line etc..

Pulled the master cylinder. Took it apart w/ help. Cleaned it out and honed the insides. it was pretty dirty, and somewhat pitted. Put it back together, and now i'm splicing brake lines
Hopefully that will be ok.

NAPA didn't have the master. I checked at another parts store (Sanells) and they needed some number they said was on the side of the cylinder. When I had it out I saw the remains of a number but can't read it. Anyone know what they were referring to?

Thanks...

Brakes work! There is a slight leak still out of the master cylinder, but hey I can drive the car.

Does anyone know the correct part # and where I can get a new master cylinder. It is a 1950 Desoto Deluxe (S-14).

Thanks,

Roark

Roark, I had one that leaked like that afer rebuilding, I thought what do I have to lose? I took it back apart and honed the heck out of it, it never leaked again, if it don't work you can always buy a new one.
