Hi everyone, my 49 has a really loose steering box. The adjustment on the side of the box was tight, I loosened it up some and it is smoother but still loose. I was reading the manual and think the next step is to remove some shims. As I understand it I need to move the box so I can get at the shims and remove them. I need to drop the steering wheel down so the end of the column is accessible, then I can get at the screws that I need to remove to pull some shims out. Am I understanding this correctly? It doesn't sound like a big job--Is it something that should take several hours or much longer than that? thanks
Hi James, thanks for the reply. I will have to get in there and take a closer look. I don't want to get in there and tear it apart right now, I would rather make it a winter project. I will get back to you, thank you for taking the time to give such a detailed answer. Dave

I have a 1949 Desoto Woodie Station wagon. I rebuilt a steering box from a parts cars and now I want to install it in the wagon. Did you ever replace your steering box and if so, can you guide me in the proper procedure?
Hi, no-I never had mine rebuilt. I need to pull mine out and just haven't had the energy or inclination to tackle it. I SHOULD do it in the fall and get it done over the winter--
