On the front apron there are staple holes indicating that at some point in time there was some kind of rubber seal on there. The problem is that it is long gone and I cannot find any photo of what it is.
Anyone with a '49 or '50 that has that part still on the car...I would like to get a photo of it so I know what to put there.
Thanks, James
James, I have a 53 and believe this front apron rubber seal may have still been there. Can you email a photo to show where this is?
My email is pmurko@cox.net
I think the seal was basically the same.
Hi all,
Attached is the spot where there are 2 sets of two staple holes. Seems like there may have been two short rubber parts/seals on each end face of the splash apron. It may be that it was outboard of the center part of the front bumper support.
Today I ran across a 1949 Coupe in a bone yard. At the same place on the apron it had 2 sets of two sheet metal screws holding something missing as well.
It appears that these was something on the cars when they left the factory, but what I have not idea.
Anyone with a clue let me know. Thanks, James
James,
I have the same staple holes on that location
10 years ago i prepared the car for sandblasting
i removed the staples
i think there were more staples with pressed cardboard
on other places in the car
perhaps protection during the assably line.
BTW on the exploited view of the cooling system in the parts list it is too see that they
used screws instead of nuts and bolts

James, this area on my 53 is kind of hidden with everything assembled. There is a thin rubber strip in there but I cannot tell if it is stapled to the piece you show. Sorry - I would have to drain and disassemble too much to see what is really going on in there. Good luck and Happy New Year!
Peter,
Did you change your personal email address ? I tried to email you when I spotted a set of Convertible Sun Visors on ebay about a month back and it bounced back. This things went for like $400 !
Best, James

Paul, Thanks.
I think I will stick some closed cell foam on it. I think it may have been there as an anti-squeak between the splash and the inside back of the bumper.
It appears that it went between the center bumper bracket and the outer bumper bracket. Directly behind the bumper guard. It looks like it must have been two parts about 1-1/2 feet long with a staple or a screw on each end holding it in place.
I would guess that if you pushed on the bumper guard they wanted a little something behind it and the sheet metal.

James,
I am assuming the piece with the staple holes in it is the radiator shield. The parts book shows this shield has a dust shield attached to it. The book calls for one dust shield per car, part #1241357 for a 49 DeSoto. I would think there should be more staple holes in the radiator shield to attach what I think was the flat rubber dust shield across the front edge of the radiator shield. Staples were used to attach rubber strips in this era. The splash shields on the inner fenders of the 55 models were stapled on also.

Hey folks,
I have looked at this for my '50 Desoto and this is the deflector shield that i right behind the bumper, it fills the opens space between the two. I also have one that is NOS in my attic and the NOS deflector does not have the holes and looking at the car, well feeling around the front of the deflector, and I cannot see anything there.
Thank being said I do see a bumper on the 1950 Parts list that is used in four location on the front edge of this deflector. Now that part number is 907 045. There is a star for this for the S-14 ('50 Desoto) and the star say 'Indicates use as required' To make matters worse the number from the parts schematic is 7-35-6 and when you look at the two descriptions the Desoto is not mentioned I only see the part number and the star under the S-14 column and a note (D34 Stn. Wgn.)
So in the end I would think this is not on the '50 Desoto. It looks to me if you did have the bumpers they may fit just over the bumper supports.
If you want to see the image from the parts book let me know. It is the cooling section.
Hope this helps.
