I think iam going to go the shoes with lining route. but even this is intimidating.I read they need to be adjusted right and molded right and this and that. is it not as easy as putting on new shoes and bleeding brakes. I am kinda thinking i should sell car dont want to but everything seems so hard and so diffrent and no one around me that is willing to work on it no shop just me . i have spent hours upon hours days upon days months upon months trying to get it going. and i guess am just frustrated to be honest. sorry for rant just how i feel i love car and have done sosos much to it. just feels like i am over my head at times. the brake drum which took me 2 weekends to finally figure out how to get off to pull off axle and now these brake i have a book but doesent really explain anything very clear. can someone please help i guess when you get to the end of any thing its when the feeling of quitting is at it highest . i have worked on this car for a year when it should of taken me 3 month if i knew what i was doing this whole time now to get to the brakes is all that is left but it is kicking my butt. agian sorry for rant dont know were else to wine just want to get the dam thing on the road finally help (=
Hey, Jason, where do you live. You need help on site. Your best bet is to join a couple car clubs..Plymouth, Dodge, chrysler etc that is close by. You can find locations of these clubs on line (just like this one) and contact the membership there..attend meetings and ask for help. You appear fairly young and us old hands love to help a new guy. I'm not kidding. Any car club has knowlegeable members who may have chevys or fords but if they are old enough they know flathead mopars too. Your engine problem is electrical and you need to hotwire that critter (forget the key switch) and if you don't have spark then, you probably just need points, rotor, condenser and plugs. Look for cracks in the dist. cap and clean everything up with carb cleaner or acetone. Most big cities have a brake shop who will reline your brakes but you need to carefully take everything apart and diagram where everything went (don't mix up the parts)..clean them up good and re-assemble but before you put the drums back on, play with the big shoe adjusters and diagram the increase/decrease direction..then collapse the shoes just so the drum goes on and moves freely, then readjust after complete reassembly. Find some volunteers.
Go to your local big truck repair shop. He can tell you where he sends his brake shoes to be relined. Also, your local auto parts store may also send shoes out for re-lining. You might have a clutch and u-joint shop nearby you that also provides re-lining service. Don't be afraid to ask, and if they help you out, a little gift is in order.
Have a nice day
Steve
