1940

1940 was a good year overall for the economy and automobile production. DeSoto was no different and the combined production of both S7 models, the Deluxe and Custom, enjoyed nice gains over the previous year. The weight on the new models was redistributed by moving the engine and the seats forward, which provided better weight distribution and more riding comfort. The wheelbase was lengthened by 3.5 inches and was overall lower than previously. The forward placement of the seats also allowed for a straight cut on the rear of the back door on 4-door models.

Inside the car, where Bedford Cord or mohair pile fabric upholstery was found, a new all-weather air control system was available. This was not air conditioning as would be available in later years, but rather a ventilation system that circulated forced fresh air. Outside, headlamps were not only new design, but also the first year for a sealed beam. Parking lamps were integrated into the top of the headlamp, but not as noticeable as the '41's would be the following year. In addition to the changes made for the model year, a March-released Sportsman package was also made available that offered flattering 2-tone paint with 2-tone interiors and a color-matching steering wheel, in addition to some added chrome features inside and out. Colors available included 2-tone green, 2-tone blue, and 2-tone blue with gunmetal.
