@rogerhubbs ever get any answers about all of this. I recently bought a 55 firedome where are the previous owner had converted it to 12 volts but left the generator in place and now I'm also having trouble with the battery being charged. I’ve done some research on this, and there seems to be consensus for replacing the field coils in a six volt generator with 12 volt compatible versions. Does anyone have an opinion on this? Is there an easy way to tell if this has already been done? Would the coils for a ‘56 fit? Would it be better to simply swap my generator out for a 1956 unit?

I purchased my ‘55 already converted to 12 volt, however the battery is not staying charged. The prior owner installed a new 12 volt regulator, but it looks as though the original generator is still in place (tag on unit says 6 volt). My question then: could the generator have been converted to 12v, or will it need to be replaced with a 12 volt generator?
