If it's like the '56, I believe it's pot metal. Pot metal can be welded, but not always with the best results as pot metal is a weak, imperfect metal to start with. It's best if you can find another one, but welding may be the route you have to go with such a hard-to-find part.

Have broken pillar under convertible top, Aluminum or pot metal? Can it be repaired or does it have to be replaced?
