I've a 1952 Firedome with the 276 Hemi and fluid drive trans. The carburetor is a Carter WCD 884S ( I believe ) water cooled carb.
I feel the carb is in good shape as I've been able to make adjustments to it with positive results. My issues are now focused on the dashpot assembly and kickdown switch.
I recently took apart both assemblies for cleaning. The dash pot was OK electrically but I feel the bellows may be leaking. I'd cleaned everything I could and lubed what I could. Operation is fine enough but I believe it can be better.
The kick down switch was something else all together. After taking it apart I found a small phenolic plunger that operates on vacuum from the carb with a piece broken off. Not only that but the plunger was ticking in the shaft. I cleaned the shaft with some 0000 steel wool to remove the light corrosion and shined up other metal parts inside. The plunger - I was able to get it back together with a dab of super glue. After letting it set up, I lightly sanded what little flash it hand and polished it with the 0000 steel wool. It seemed to slide up and down just fine at that point. However I do not feel its operating at an efficient level.
So I've decided to hedge my bets and find another kick down switch and dash pot bellows assembly. Barring that, a dash pot rebuild kit. As I stated earlier, I believe the bellows is not in good enough shape.
My question to you all is this - Is there a reliable source out there for the dash pot? Otherwise I plan to re-create the bellows somehow. Knowing what material to use will be the challenge.
As far as the carburetor itself, I'm toying with the idea of a replacement ( non water cooled ) that utilizes the kick down and dash pot in conjunction with the fluid drive.

I've seen and purchased a couple dashpots on eBaY over the years. These are old stock items so there is no guarantee those rubber boots will be 100%. There are folks that rebuild vacuum advance units so I'd guess they could also rebuild dashpots.
